Although summer vacations are in full swing, Seiko definitely isn't slowing down.
We are witnessing a steady stream of new releases from the Japanese brand. At WatchTested, we were fortunate to get a sneak peek at some of the new models. The last time we were shown the upcoming releases, one particularly caught my attention. The Seiko Presage Classic HCC009 is a watch that's unforgettable. At first glance, it may seem that the reason is the gold color of the case, but that's not it. The true magnet is the stunning green dial, which mesmerizes upon closer inspection. It's what makes this limited collaboration with Tradman's Bonsai one of the most intriguing Seiko releases in recent years.
Golden Hue of the Case: A Purist's View
Returning to the gold color of the watch, it's worth noting that I am a purist when it comes to gold models. When choosing gold or two-tone watches, I prefer genuine gold products rather than PVD coatings. Similarly, with faux patina (fauxtina), it seems that the watches are trying to be something they're not. Nevertheless, I understand the visual appeal of some gold-tone models. The Seiko Presage Classic HCC009 is a perfect example. Could these watches be great in stainless steel? Absolutely! But it's the combination of the gold PVD case and bracelet with the dark green bonsai-style dial that made me fall in love with this limited series.
Technical Specifications of Seiko Presage Classic HCC009
Let's look at the details of the new model. The HCC009 case is made of stainless steel with a diameter of 38 mm, a thickness of 12.9 mm, and a length of 43.8 mm from lug to lug. The gold PVD coating of the case is complemented by a fluted bezel, which adds expressiveness to the classic design. On the right side of the case is an enlarged crown, partially recessed into the case. Thanks to its size, it is very convenient to operate. Seiko uses this case in the model range with diameters of 36 mm, 38 mm, and 40 mm. In my opinion, the 38 mm version is the optimal choice for a classic style.
The case is paired with a beautiful dark green dial. Its development was carried out in collaboration with Tradman's Bonsai - a creative collective specializing in the creation and curation of "bonsai spaces." The company's mission is to promote the traditional art of bonsai worldwide.
Collaboration with Tradman's Bonsai: Tradition and Innovation
Instead of simply honoring the essence of bonsai, which is based on the spirit of hospitality and selflessness, Tradman's Bonsai also strives for innovation. The company collaborates with various brands related to culture, fashion, and art. The inspiration for the joint project with Seiko was the serene beauty of the Japanese black pine bonsai, illuminated by moonlight. As you might have guessed, the moonlight is reflected in the golden hue of the case and bracelet.
Dial - The Main Focus of the Model
The pattern on the dial is inspired by the character and texture that appear on aging pines over time. It's an exquisite motif that is always present but reveals its true beauty only upon close examination. The dial color is green, reminiscent of pine needles (matsuba-iro in Japanese) - a traditional Japanese shade considered a symbol of good luck. I love this color for its richness, depth, and aristocracy. The combination of pattern and color makes the dial truly outstanding. I consider it one of the best among recent Seiko models.
On the dial are gold hour markers, a minute scale on the rehaut, and text, all in the same golden tone. The golden hands complete the look, creating a stylish and harmonious contrast with the green background. Upon closer inspection, the abundance of gold appears very organic and balanced.
Finishing Touches: Bracelet and Strap
The overall style is complemented by a gold-tone seven-row link bracelet, which perfectly matches the watch design. If you're not a fan of gold bracelets or want to diversify the look, a textured leather strap inspired by pine needles, with a gold-tone clasp, is included.
Inside the HCC009 is the proprietary automatic caliber 6R51, visible through the sapphire case back. The movement operates at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, contains 24 jewels, and has a power reserve of 72 hours. This caliber was introduced in 2024 in the limited series Studio Ghibli Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It is based on the 6R55 but lacks the date function. The absence of a date window is a key element preserving the purity and beauty of the dial in this limited Tradman's Bonsai model.
Wearing Experience of Seiko Presage Classic Tradman's Bonsai Limited Edition
As you might have guessed, I really enjoyed wearing this limited model. The 38 mm diameter is perfect for my wrist, and the appearance is magnificent. I understand that it is not the most mainstream choice, as the model differs from typical steel Presage. However, the Presage Classic series already has several gold-tone models, so it's not uncommon. I was particularly captivated by the vintage atmosphere of the watch. In reality, the gold does not look flashy or pretentious, and combined with the green dial, it creates a warm, rustic look that I highly appreciate.
I only managed to try on the watch with the bracelet, and that's what I would choose as the main option. The leather strap is well-suited for more formal occasions, but the bracelet is my preferred choice for everyday wear. It's flexible and very comfortable due to the seven-row link construction. This became the finishing touch after I fell in love with the appearance of the HCC009. You see, I found it hard to take the watch off my wrist even after a short time of wearing it. That's how much they impressed me. Honestly, I didn't expect that. That's why this article is a kind of ode to the watch. I just didn't think this limited Tradman's Bonsai model would appeal to me so much.
Final Thoughts on Seiko Presage Classic HCC009
Overall, this is an intriguing release from Seiko. Firstly, I love the concept and appearance. Secondly, the watch prompted me to delve deeper into the fascinating world of bonsai. I quickly immersed myself in reading about the art of bonsai itself, and then about Tradman's Bonsai. I can confidently say that after getting acquainted with the basics, I definitely want to learn more about bonsai and its rich history. For a watch capable of sparking such interest, it's truly impressive. I hope this limited series will attract more people to the world of bonsai.
Seiko will release 2000 pieces of the HCC009. Sales will begin on September 1, 2026, with a recommended price of 1400 euros. The model will be available exclusively in Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide. This number seems large, but I'm confident the watches will sell quickly. As I mentioned earlier, it's not the most mainstream choice due to the all-gold design. However, considering the quality, demand will be high. The best proof is my initial doubt and skepticism as a purist regarding gold PVD, which quickly disappeared. I left the Seiko office with this watch as a clear favorite among many new models, and that speaks for itself.
