The Speedmaster 38 collection, introduced in 2017, is one of the many Speedmaster lines offering a different take on Omega's flagship chronograph model.
Featuring 38mm cases, oval sub-dials, and automatic movements, the Speedmaster 38mm is primarily aimed at a female audience, offering a wide range of materials and color options. In 2024, the brand expanded the collection with eight new Omega Speedmaster 38 watches with diamonds: two in 18-carat Sedna Gold, two in 18-carat Moonshine Gold, and four in stainless steel.
Regardless of the material, the 38mm cases with a thickness of 14.7 mm and a lug-to-lug length of 45 mm are equipped with bezels adorned with 52 diamonds (approximately 1.5 carats) and a crown set with a single diamond. While I doubt these will be the first watches you grab for a trip to the pool, they are water-resistant up to 100 meters.
The Sedna Gold models (Omega's proprietary rose gold) feature brown dials with PVD coating and horizontally oval sub-dials with a silvery finish. Meanwhile, the Moonshine Gold models (Omega's proprietary pale yellow gold) come with green dials with PVD coating and silvery sub-dials. The stainless steel models are available with dials in both colors.
Each of the new diamond chronographs of the Omega Speedmaster 38 is offered either with a bracelet matching the case or with a leather strap matching the dial. The three-link bracelets, polished and matte, feature Omega's patented comfort adjustment system, while the leather straps come with folding clasps.
The trio of horizontal oval counters, located on the dials at the “3”, “6”, and “9 o'clock” positions, are decorated with diamond edges, further accentuating their clear shape. According to Omega representatives, the oval sub-dials are borrowed from vintage De Ville watches. The 12-hour chronograph counter at the “6 o'clock” position features a vertically placed oval date window. The hands and sections near the indices are coated with Super-LumiNova, which glows green. Finally, the hour index framing at the “12 o'clock” position is a pair of round diamonds.
The screw-down case backs of the new diamond Speedmaster 38 watches are adorned with the emblematic Omega seahorse medallion and conceal the chronograph movements inside, the Caliber 3330. While the Caliber 3300 is based on the automatic column-wheel Longines Caliber L688.2 (which, in turn, is based on the ETA A08.L01), it features a co-axial escapement and a silicon balance spring Si14. The Omega Caliber 3300, certified as a chronometer, operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 52-hour power reserve.
The diamonds on the bezels, dials, and crowns, as well as the cases and bracelets made of precious metals, undoubtedly represent a super-fashionable execution of the Speedmaster chronograph, which is reflected in their prices. The diamond-studded Speedmaster 38 watches in stainless steel are priced at $17,400 with leather straps and $17,800 with bracelets.
