The Japanese industrial giant Seiko boasts one of the most unique and diverse catalogs in the history of dive watches. However, few, if any, of the brand's aquatic models are as bold and distinctive as the professional diver's series 'Tuna' with its enclosed cylindrical case. Although the 'Tuna' design traces back to 1975, the series reached its peak in 1986 with the introduction of a quartz-powered model rated for 1000 meters, setting new standards for capabilities and durability in professional dive watches.
Currently, Seiko is no stranger to revisiting its vintage designs to create new models, and for its latest release, the brand reimagines the 1986 'Tuna' model using modern materials and high-quality execution. The new Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition is aimed directly at the brand's passionate fans and serves as a high-quality homage to one of the company's most dramatic and enduring tool watch designs.

There is no denying that the Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition is an impressive watch. At 49.4mm across and 16.3mm thick, the monobloc titanium case is bound to be commanding on the wrist. However, the hidden lugs and round silhouette soften the lug overhang. The utilitarian case form echoes the classic 'Tuna' model, with a wide, heavily toothed diver’s bezel encircled by a protective black shell that dominates the case view.
For the 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition, Seiko interprets this element in zirconia ceramic, providing hardness seven times that of conventional steel. The bezel is crafted from bare matte titanium with a black insert, and the hex screws securing the shroud at the '1 o'clock', '5 o'clock', '7 o'clock', and '11 o'clock' positions are finished in anodized gold as a nod to the fan-favorite 'Golden Tuna' colorway of the original 1986 model. For added security, Seiko has modified the screw-down crown located at '4 o'clock' on the 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition, adding a black gloss detail with yellow 'Lock' text and an arrow indicating the direction to screw the crown.
As an additional precaution, Seiko uses the same bright yellow color for the crown tube, allowing owners to see at a glance when the crown is unscrewed and not ready for diving. As befits this rugged, professional-grade saturation diver design, Seiko rates the water resistance of this case at 1,000 meters.

Like the case, the dial of the Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition simplifies and modernizes the look of the original 1980s model, while integrating special nods to the series' heritage. The overall dial layout remains the same as its predecessors, with applied diver indices and muscular sword and arrow hands, but this new iteration differs in the details. The hands of the 1986 model are replaced with a centrally striped minute hand more reminiscent of the original 1975 'Grandfather Tuna' model.
Furthermore, the indices at the '12 o'clock', '6 o'clock', and '9 o'clock' positions do not use the syringe tips present in the 1986 version, allowing for a departure from the semi-crosshair dial style in favor of a more minimalist design. The dial surface itself uses a matte gradient from dark blue to deep black, evoking the descent into ocean depths, but potentially diminishing the hyper-functional spirit of the line.
Seiko adds a bright accent to this dial with twin strokes of hazard yellow on the seconds hand and depth rating text at the '6 o'clock' position, adding a splash of contrast to the deep and subdued cool tones of the dial surface and visually tying together the case and dial appearance.

Seiko uses its in-house 7C46 quartz movement to power the Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition. While the 7C46 is far from new, it was designed with the operational requirements of the 'Tuna' line in mind and includes a high-torque motor for the broad hands with intense luminous coating, magnetic resistance of 4800 A/m, and an all-metal construction for durability and longevity.
Although it may lack the refinement and finishing of the 9F series quartz calibers from sibling brand Grand Seiko, the 7C46 is undoubtedly reliable, offering an accuracy of +15/-15 seconds per month with a five-year battery life. Seiko pairs the limited edition 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition with reinforced accordion-style silicone rubber straps in black and dark blue, both with hazard yellow accent text.

Combining reliable capabilities with high-class materials and a unique nod to the 'Tuna' history, the Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition represents one of the most refined iterations of this line, aimed at the most discerning fans. However, more casual enthusiasts might balk at its premium pricing.
Only 1,200 pieces of the Seiko Prospex 1986 Quartz Diver’s 35th Anniversary Limited Edition will be released, available at select Seiko boutiques and authorized dealers in July 2021 for an MSRP of $2,600. For more detailed information, visit the brand’s website.
