This week we look at another classic Rolex model.
The Cosmograph Daytona is one of the brand's most iconic models in the world of watches. Steel versions of this racing chronograph are extremely hard to find at official Rolex dealers, and secondary market prices often exceed retail. That's why we've compiled a selection of five chronographs that can be worthy alternatives to the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Let's find out which models made our list.
For any iconic Rolex model, there are numerous alternatives. This is true for the Daytona as well. But can these watches replace the legendary chronograph in your heart and collection? The answer to this question is always individual. If you are seriously aiming for the Daytona, you are unlikely to find anything equivalent. However, if you are drawn to the Rolex Daytona but are considering other options, this list will be helpful. Here are our top five alternatives.
Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 "Ed White"
An easy choice for the first position is the Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 "Ed White". We even compared the Daytona and this model in one of the episodes of the Sunday Morning Showdown series. If you want to see an honest comparison of two heavyweights, I recommend checking out that article after reading this material. For now, let's talk about the Omega Speedmaster in more detail.

As is known, the Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 is a version of the model 105.003, worn by NASA astronaut Ed White during the first spacewalk in 1965. In developing the modern version, Omega relied on the watch of astronaut Gene Cernan with model 105.003.
The modern version is produced at a specialized factory where one watchmaker is responsible for the complete assembly. Each piece, including the movement, is assembled and regulated twice: it is assembled, adjusted, disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. This approach ensures an individual touch, unlike the mass production of the Rolex Daytona. Moreover, modern manufacturing technologies guarantee high-quality execution of the third series of the classic Speedmaster. This is immediately felt when worn - the level of detailing and finish noticeably surpasses the standard Moonwatch.

Technical Specifications of Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Case Diameter | 39.7 mm |
| Lug-to-Lug | 47.8 mm |
| Case Thickness | 13 mm (including glass) |
| Case Material | Stainless Steel |
| Bezel | Steel with black ceramic insert |
| Dial | Black with three sub-dials, featuring concentric graining |
| Glass | Sapphire with Omega logo engraving |
| Movement | Omega Calibre 321 with Sedna Gold plating |
| Power Reserve | 55 hours |
| Price | €17,100 |

The special pride of the model is the modern Calibre 321, a remake of the classic movement that powered the Speedmaster in the past. Omega paid much attention to the technical and aesthetic perfection of the movement. The power reserve has been increased from 44 to 55 hours, making the watch convenient for daily wear.

Zenith Chronomaster Sport
Another obvious choice is the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. Upon debut in 2021, the watch quickly earned the nickname "Zaytona" due to its visual similarity to the Rolex Daytona. However, this did not prevent fans from acquiring this model, which truly is an excellent alternative to the Daytona. Moreover, Zenith played a key role in creating the first generation of the automatic Rolex Daytona by providing the El Primero 400 caliber, which Rolex modified into the 4030 caliber. This movement powered the Daytona from 1988 to 2000.

Returning to the Zenith Chronomaster Sport. Despite the visual resemblance to the Daytona, over time the model has developed its own character. The Chronomaster Sport Titanium version, in particular, stands out, which I had the pleasure of testing in 2024. While the visual similarity to the Daytona elicited mixed reviews, the steel models have several of Zenith's signature design elements that distinguish them from the legendary Rolex chronograph. Additionally, the Chronomaster Sport line demonstrates significant diversity.

Features of Zenith Chronomaster Sport
- Case diameter 40 mm, thickness 13.6 mm, lug-to-lug 47 mm.
- Bezels made of ceramic and metal, changing the appearance.
- Case materials: stainless steel, titanium, ceramic, gold.
- Variety of dials, including meteorite options.
- Movement: El Primero 3600 caliber with 36,000 vph, 35 jewels, and a 60-hour power reserve.
- Oyster-style bracelet ensures wearing comfort.

The price of standard steel models with a ceramic bezel is around €12,200. The Zenith Chronomaster Sport is the perfect second choice in the list of Rolex Daytona alternatives.

Breitling Chronomat B01 42
The third model is the Breitling Chronomat B01 42. The watch has been produced since 2020 and still looks modern and stylish. Although the Chronomat is technically an aviation chronograph, not a racing one, the presence of a tachymeter scale provides similar functionality. Moreover, Chronomat is a legendary name in the world of chronographs.

The B01 42 version immediately attracted attention with its updated design, retaining key elements of the 1980s: a rotating bezel with inserts every 15 minutes and a Rouleaux bracelet.

Technical Specifications of Breitling Chronomat B01 42
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Case Diameter | 42 mm |
| Case Thickness | 15.1 mm |
| Lug-to-Lug | 50.5 mm |
| Case Material | Stainless Steel |
| Movement | In-house Calibre B01, 28,800 vph |
| Power Reserve | 70 hours |
| Price | €9,400 |
Breitling offers several dial options: green, silver, blue, and copper (my favorite). There is also a version on a rubber strap imitating the Rouleaux bracelet, but the original bracelet is preferable. The Chronomat B01 42 is an excellent combination of functionality and style.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono
When it comes to Rolex alternatives, Tudor immediately comes to mind - the sister brand of Rolex. The Black Bay Chrono model offers a relatively affordable option that many will appreciate. However, the Black Bay Chrono differs from the Daytona. The most noticeable difference is the two-counter dial design instead of the three-counter on the Daytona. Instead of a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, Tudor has a 45-minute counter, and there is also a date window at 6 o'clock, which the Daytona lacks.

Despite this, the overall style of the Black Bay Chrono is inspired by vintage manual Daytonas.
Technical Specifications of Tudor Black Bay Chrono
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Case Diameter | 41 mm |
| Case Thickness | 14.4 mm |
| Lug-to-Lug | 50.1 mm |
| Movement | Tudor MT5813 (based on Breitling 01) |
| Frequency | 28,800 vph |
| Power Reserve | 70 hours |
| Price | €6,190–€6,300 |

The line includes models with black and white "panda" dials, blue Boutique Edition, and versions in gold and steel. In 2023, Tudor introduced a lightweight version of the Black Bay Chrono "Carbon 25" for the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls F1 team.

The MT5813 is a reliable and COSC-certified movement providing high accuracy and a long power reserve. Tudor offers bracelets in two styles: a five-link Jubilee and a classic Oyster with decorative rivets. Prices vary depending on the bracelet, but the Black Bay Chrono remains an attractive choice in the Daytona alternative segment.

Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph
We conclude the list with an affordable alternative - the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph. The Japanese manufacturer offers two series of solar chronographs, differing in case size. We chose the more compact 39 mm models, which are perfect for owners with slender wrists.

Technical Specifications of Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Case Diameter | 39 mm |
| Case Thickness | 13.3 mm |
| Lug-to-Lug | 45.5 mm |
| Movement | Quartz Solar Calibre V192 |
| Power Reserve | 6 months (when fully charged) |
| Price | €750 |

Versions with a standard steel bezel and with black coating are available. Dials come in various colors, including classic "panda" and soft pink. All models come with a comfortable three-row bracelet with matte or mixed links.

The V192 caliber ensures modern practicality, including a date function and smooth chronograph operation. This is an excellent choice for those looking for a sporty racing chronograph at an affordable price.
