We covered this model at the end of last year, but it slipped under my radar, and I recently rediscovered these sturdy khaki-colored sports watches. By name and nature, they are field watches, and as you can see from Nacho's sharp shots, they are perfect for this.
What Makes Sport Watches Versatile?
In 2024, the wave of vintage-style wristwatches remains as strong as two and even four years ago, and the Khaki line has become very important for Hamilton. In the price range from 800 to 1500 euros, the watches offer an enticing and multifaceted taste with a retro twist. But thanks to excellent readability and clean design, the Khaki Field is close to becoming universal and the first good Swiss mechanical watch for many. These are undoubtedly field watches, but as general-purpose sports watches, they are also winners in the genre.
With beige lume and clear white numbers, the small 37mm versions of the Khaki Field Expedition, like the blue dial above, are extremely versatile. I even think these field watches work equally well in several genres. Sure, there's a compass bezel here, but with a lug-to-lug length of 44mm, a thickness of 10.45mm, and refined details, I would wear them with a formal shirt. Am I blaspheming? Dress watches are dead, and this is not a replacement for them, but I have come to love the size up to 38mm to avoid a rough look. And while the compass bezel designates the watch for outdoor activities, it simply tells your friends you're cooler than you seem. Moreover, the 37mm watch will definitely fit under most cuffs.
Clear Monochrome and Steel
I would feel a strong connection with the 37mm models, but the 42mm Rolex Explorer II is not popular for nothing. Maybe it's the Rolex, but there's something unusual about them. So how do the 41mm Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition differ? Well, for starters, its value is excellent: 1195 euros for a three-link steel bracelet. Perhaps these watches don't have the crown and prestige of the quietly speaking Rollie, but I would prefer them.
I don't need the Crown's approval among friends, and frankly, these Khaki Field Expeditions with a diameter of 41mm, a lug-to-lug length of 48mm, and a thickness of 11.15mm are smaller and more comfortable. The automatic H-10 caliber with an 80-hour power reserve and Nivachron balance spring is one of the best movements the Swatch Group has ever created. What's not to like?
Thanks to the absence of a recognizable 24-hour inner khaki-colored numeral circle, these watches are very legible and almost reminiscent of IWC pilot watches. Maybe it's unintentional, but it makes them even more like GADA (go anywhere, do anything) watches. No, they don't have a GMT function, but even so, they have all the hallmarks of a favorite watch. And the solid 100m water resistance only enhances their usability.
Choice, Choice…
The black dial on a steel bracelet looks the most formal, although I also like the clarity of the white dial version. The choice isn't easy for die-hard Hamilton fans who have been waiting for the compass bezel. As for me, I equally love both the small 37mm model in a classic leather case with contrasting stitching (1,115 euros) and the model on a bracelet (1,195 euros). But despite my love for colored dials, it's hard to go wrong with a black dial and bracelet for everyday wear.

I tried not to explain the compass bezel and its useful function. I know we all have GPS functions in our phones, but we tend to forget that the range is not infinite. So if you have a map and get lost, here's how it works: hold the watch flat and find the Sun in the sky. Turn the bezel to set the southern marker halfway between the hour hand (pointing at the Sun) and the “12 o'clock” mark. Now the northern marker will point you in that direction!
I honestly admit that I've never used the compass bezel and may not use it in the future. But the feeling is the same as realizing you can dive to 1000 meters (with these watches, unfortunately, only to 100), but you'll never do it. In other words, it's good for peace of mind. And although I'm a big fan of Seiko, these watches easily beat the OG Alpinist (I'm ready for your anger) and are less polarizing. Yes, Hamilton, Expedition is a great version of the Khaki Field, and thank you for offering two sizes. With their universal design and solid technical specifications, they are also a pretty good companion for field/sport/casual exploration.
