Elements of science fiction and space exploration are often found in Urwerk watches, as seen in the UR-100 collection. However, it's not only about space, as you'll learn from the latest model. Meet the Urwerk UR-100 Electrum, and don't let the name deceive you.

Urwerk UR-100 Electrum watch showcasing its unique design

The Urwerk UR-100 Electrum uses one of the oldest and most original precious metals: Electrum. Electrum is a natural alloy of gold with at least 20% silver, containing several other elements like copper and iron. In ancient times, electrum was used to mint coins as a form of currency for trade and was called "white gold." It was mainly used by the ancient Greeks, Indian civilizations, and Egyptians. One reason it is no longer used as currency is the variability of its composition, which makes it difficult to determine the gold content compared to alloys and thus its elemental value on the go.

Urwerk uses this material for the case and crown, as well as some components of the mechanism/dial. The front surface of the case is adorned with a ribbed circular pattern reminiscent of Greek amphitheaters to adhere to this theme. This is not the first time Urwerk has decorated the face of the UR-100 case, as shown in the UR-100V T-Rex model. Honestly, this model remains somewhat more subtle, with a pale golden sheen of the Electrum material.

Detailed look at Urwerk UR-100 Electrum's dial and mechanism

The UR12.01 caliber still displays the hours with rotating satellites and the minutes with a curved track at the bottom, with a retrograde hand following the hour satellite. The left and right sides of the display still indicate the Earth's rotation distances and orbital distances traveled in 20 minutes. It's not something you'll need daily, but it significantly enhances the watch's cool factor. On the back of the watch, you can see a drilled rotor with a planetary flat turbine to reduce shock load on the bearing and minimize wear.
